Research into Statin Drugs
Less than half the cholesterol in the bloodstream comes from diet.
Most is made by the body – in particular by the liver. Statins target
the –HMG-CoA reductase enzyme in the liver cells. They inhibit this
enzyme to prevent cholesterol synthesis.

addressing cholesterol problems
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) recently
released a study looking at American cardiovascular health trends
from 1999 to 2006. "Control of blood pressure and glucose and
cholesterol levels has improved since 1999 for adults with cardiovascular
disease and diabetes, but racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic differences
have not narrowed significantly"

A University of Pennsylvania study on the possible use of statins
to prevent decline in lung capacity in former smokers concluded
that while there was some favorable correlation, the scientists could
not definitively establish a link and could not recommend statins
for prevention or treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
