Medicare Paying for Statins

July 2007 - Reuters reports that since Medicare started offerring prescription drug coverage, use of statins has risen. Some of this rise could be due to the fact that some prescriptions came off patent and prices fell. Surely a lot of it is due to general coverage of presciptions that Medicare, which is available to 43 million Americans, can get. Medicare Part D increased sales of statins by 7% accordning to a study. The pharmaceutical industry supported the change in Medicare law, which went into effect in early 2006.


2007 - The American Heart Association issued a change in position on children and adolescents with high-risk lipid abnormalities, recommends statins as first-line treatment for some kids.
